The meeting tonight was interesting.... Some people got really upset with each other, and it was difficult for me to try and find a common ground between the different sides. I think I have resorted to just keeping my mouth shut because I'm just too tired to fight back or speak up. I'm not sure which is better, silence or action in these kinds of situations. I am pretty conflicted about my upcoming graduation... leaving something i've poured my heart and soul into for the last 4 years. I have faith in the new girls, especially because we've put so many good methods into action... our constitution is the best that I've ever seen, we do house parties, fundraisers, methods of behavior modification (misconduct), and a general way of doing things. I know that it is frustrating for many girls that are in the in-between stage, not quite graduating, but old enough to know that things may get tougher than they already are. I think that these girls will do just fine, there may be a bit of a stumbling period, but thats normal, do the best you can, don't give up and don't let your guard down. This organization means so much to many of the girls in it, and it means the world to me, even when i'm not so sure i can keep it together for much longer, i know that it is worth it.
That is the natural progression to life and to this organization. We grow up, we get old, we teach younger girls and then we leave. We have to kick you out of the nest sometime and I know that you are going to fly just fine:) some words of advice:
1. keep your cool and don't get fired up, no matter what, take in as much information as you can, evaluate it, and make the best decision you can with what you know. you might not be right and you might be wrong, but doing something is better than doing nothing at all.
2. Do your best to balance sorority life with your personal and academic life. as my father says "there's always somethin" and when things are good in some areas, everything is thrown out of balance by something stressful happening in another area. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made to pull it together. That means getting your schoolwork done, seeing your boyfriend, and then committing to a sorority event later that day.
3. Don't spend all your time with sisters talking about the drama. Discussing situations and circumstances is ok, gaining a better understanding of a situation is good, even venting from time to time is good, but don't let it take over because the stress with only fuel the drama.
4. When you do spend time together, enjoy it... It is over before you know it.
5. Know when to say no to something, but if you say yes, if you commit to an event, if you plan something, or you have a responsibility to fulfill, then do it.
6. Always tell the people you need to if you can't come to an event. It's always better to cover your ass then to have to explain yourself later, so email, call, or im even if you don't want to or feel like it.
7. Spend some time alone, it will benefit you in the long run and save you from insanity later.
8. Don't underestimate yourself or others, sometimes people can surprise you.
9. Ask QUESTIONS!, if you don't understand something, don't just assume anything. Ignorance is not always a valid excuse.
10. Admit it when you are wrong. It will serve you better in the long run and people will learn to respect your opinion. Remember that we are all human.
11. Pay your dues. Set up a payment plan and do you're best to adhere to it. Not paying will only screw you in the long run by having to do fundraising or being restricted from fun events.
12. Take notes and keep a planner and write stuff down, showing up to things shows others that you are reliable.
13. Respect each other and everyone's opinions. don't discuss politics or religion, especially in front of a lot of people. These topics are powerful, you have enough to deal with, without talking about this stuff. Learn to agree to disagree, that doesn't make you weak.
14. Have fun and enjoy your time together!
